Cooking on a budget
I have always enjoyed cooking though sometimes I have been known to get impatient with it. Today’s fast paced world sort of demands instant gratification and that includes hunger. I really feel sometimes that we are losing some of the wonderful things that our parents and grandparents got to enjoy eating simply because we do not take the time to prepare them. It is something that I have promised myself to work towards remedying.
Fortunately cooking a good wholesome meal does not have to be a strain. In addition to a wide range of family recipes I have discovered a website which is designed around the premise of good food on the cheap without getting bogged down in gourmet ingredients. Ramen Days is a weblog repository of amazingly good yet incredibly simple recipes by man with a desire to eat something more than greasy fast food. Never steamed a fish in your life? No problem, Caleb’s got you covered. Not sure what type of snack to have for your next gaming session? Try some of Caleb’s baked bread crumb fries. To quote Alton Brown, “That’s good eats.”
One of the keys to cooking good food on a budget is to make sure you stay stocked with the essentials. If your grocery shopping experience consists of buying a bunch of frozen pizzas and hamburger patties then we need to make some changes. Here is what I consider a list of essentials for your refrigerator and pantry:
- All Purpose Flour
- Granulated Sugar
- Kosher Salt
- Peppercorns
- Cream of Mushroom Soup
- Onion Soup Mix
- Oil (Vegetable and Olive preferably)
- Raw Onions
- Mini Carrots
- Unsalted Butter (in my opinion it is easier to cook with butter than margarine, but you can substitute if you want)
- Large Eggs
This is the short list of things I always keep stocked and use constantly in cooking a very wide variety of dishes. If there is anything else you would add feel free to drop me a line in the comments.
